UN proposed another plan to regulate the Cyprus issue
The Cyprus problem is an issue to deal with for anyone who feels like it. The United Nations Organization exposed another plan to settle the conflict between the Cyprian and Turkish parts of the island. The UN unveiled this plan on Monday. So, what is the future of Cyprus according to the UN?
United Nations stated that the island is supposed to become the single state that will consist of two parts. It will be something like Switzerland and its cantons, the Mediterranean variant, so to speak.
According to the plan of the United Nations specialists, there should be a presidential council established in Cyprus. This council would have six members – three Turkish and three Greek ones. The president and vice president of the council would change every ten months, Greek and Turkish, one after another.
Further, the UN believes that the Supreme Court of the new country is supposed to have nine members: three Turkish men and three Greek men. Three other judges are not supposed to represent either Cyprus or Turkey. Which side and which country those three other judges are going to represent is still a mystery.
Well, the plan might be good, although it is absolutely not clear, how it is going to become real. Furthermore, it is not known, if the Greek and the Turkish are going to like it. All negotiations between the leaders of the two communities - Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash – ended up with nothing.
It deems that it is rather simple to explain this state of things. The leaders of the two communities are quite happy about the status quo that has been formed over the recent 30 years. Settling all problems between Greek and Turkish Cypriots is a long-term and hard goal to pursue. In addition to that, the Greek part of Cyprus is about to join the European Union. At first, the EU allegedly insisted on the normalization of relations between the communities of the island. However, they later decided that it would be very hard to solve that problem. The European Union eventually decided to welcome only one part of the island. As it is supposed, the event will take place at the EU summit on December 12th.
The UN initiative pertaining to the Cyprus issue is not likely to be incredible progress in the solution of the Cypriot conflict. The UN has tried to participate in the settlement of a lot of international issues lately. The efficiency of that participation is still doubtful. Any changes are unlikely to happen in this respect.
However, it is not ruled out that the Greeks and the Turkish will sign an agreement on the threshold of December 12th. Yet, it will be nothing more than a declaration, a piece of paper. There have been too many bad days for the communities over decades. “Cypriot cantons” are not going to be any use.
