Russia sees absolutely no threat from Iran, aims to continue nuclear cooperation

Russia does not see any threat from Iran. The Russian administration feels bewildered about the fact that the USA uses those unreal threats to justify the deployment of its missile defense system in Eastern Europe.

Russia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, stated at a press conference in Teheran on June 20 that if the USA considered Iran as a threat then such suspicions could be easily dissipated with the information transmitted online to the radar station in Gabala, in Azerbaijan.

The minister also said that USA’s missile defense plans in Europe could trigger the new arms race. “We are definitely nearing the point when we could resume the arms race,” Sergei Lavrov told reporters.

That is why, Lavrov said, Russia openly expresses its stance on the missile defense system and conducts dialogue with the USA on the matter. “Our offer to use the radar station is aimed to make the plans to deploy the missile system in Poland and the Czech Republic unnecessary,” the Russian minister said. Lavrov added that Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush would continue to discuss the matter during their meeting in the beginning of July in the USA.

Sergei Lavrov also said that the new resolution of the UN Security Council on Iran could be approved if the IAEA finds the further cooperation with Teheran impossible, Interfax reports.

“We welcome the readiness of the Iranian side to clarify the questions which the IAEA has. It is the IAEA that plays the key role in the estimation of the Iranian nuclear program. IAEAS’s conclusions on the Iranian nuclear program are the only conclusions made by independent professions which have to be taken fully into consideration,” Sergei Lavrov stated.

Russia and Iran intend to continue their contacts to execute contractual terms on the construction of the nuclear power plant in Bushehr. “It doesn’t go about Russia’s promises. It goes about the execution of contractual terms,” Lavrov said at the press conference in Teheran.

“We have recently discussed the question with the Foreign Minister of Iran. We have no misunderstanding regarding the execution of contractual obligations regarding the construction of the nuclear power plant in Bushehr. We agreed to continue the cooperation between competent departments regarding the subject,” Itar-Tass quoted Minister Lavrov as saying.

Teheran intends to expand strategic relations with Moscow without any restrictions. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who also spoke to reporters at the press conference after the meeting of five Caspian foreign ministers in Teheran, stated that Iran’s relations with Russia could be described as strategic, but not superficial relations. “Iran and Russia are two historical allies that should conduct broad cooperation because rivalry will not bring good to our countries. We hope that the Iranian nuclear problem will be solved after a certain amount of ups and downs. We act within the norms of the IAEA. Iran stands for developing only positive relations with Russia without restrictions. We are certain that the strong Iran is good for the Russian Federation,” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said.
