Russia to Set up Refugee Camp for Iraqis in Iran - 24 March, 2003

Russian President Vladimir Putin has today held discussions with key ministers over the Ministry of Emergency Situations' work to set up a camp in Iran for Iraqi refugees. Sergei Shoigu, the Minister for Emergency Situations, told the President that the final delivery of equipment to Iran was made yesterday. The ministry intends to set up a camp for 5,000 people. A final decision on the camp's location will be taken today. The ministry is also prepared for the second stage of its humanitarian operation - sending medical personnel to the camp to help prevent any epidemics from arising.

Vladimir Putin drew attention to the increase in the number of victims of the Iraqi conflict and also to captured soldiers. He expressed the hope that Iraq would meet all international requirements concerning prisoners of war.
