Hashimoto, who served as premier from 1996-1998, was rushed to hospital on June 4 and underwent surgery to remove a large part of his intestine, Kyodo News agency said.
The 68-year-old was in critical condition Friday, Kyodo said, citing Hashimoto's younger brother Daijiro Hashimoto, who is governor of Kochi prefecture, the AP reports, the AP reports.
Hashimoto retired from politics in September 2005, citing poor health, Kyodo said.
