The 600-megawatt station in Hutgyi, Myanmar, is the first of five to be built in partnership by China, Thailand and Myanmar along the Salween, a Sinohydro official told Dow Jones Newswires.
Sinohydro, China's largest hydropower station builder, signed an agreement Monday with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to build the Hutgyi station, the Chinese company said on its Web site, according to the AP.
Thailand and Myanmar signed a memorandum of understanding in May 2005 to build five hydropower stations with total capacity of 12,700 megawatts on the Salween River, which flows through China, Thailand and Myanmar, the AP reports.
