Turkey's official negotiations with the EU opened on Monday, but EU member Cyprus has threatened to block Turkey's negotiations if Ankara does not recognize the island's Greek-led government.
Turkey has propped up an ethnically Turkish government on the north of the island since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded to stop an abortive Greek-led coup that would have unified the island with Greece. The north is recognized only by Turkey, the AP reports.
