President Vladimir Putin was set to meet European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Friday for talks on energy cooperation and other business before an agreement governing relations between Russia and the European Union expires next year. The two sides are to meet again in the southern Russian resort of Sochi in May and at the Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg in July.

On Thursday, G-8 energy ministers meeting in Moscow called for major new investments and the development of nuclear power as high oil prices and uncertainty about supplies weigh on the global economy. Putin has set energy security as one of the three priority areas this year for the G-8, which Russia is chairing, reports the AP.
