A gunfight in a Hong Kong tourist area killed an on-duty police officer and another man who may have been a policeman, while critically wounding another officer who was on patrol, a government statement said.
A patrol constable and another man carrying police identification documents were found unconscious with bullet wounds in the Tsim Sha Tsui tourist district at around 1 a.m., then declared dead after being rushed to a hospital, a police statement said.
Another on-duty constable, found unconscious in the same place with gunshot wounds to his face and legs, was hospitalized in critical condition, the statement said.
Officers at the scene found three pistols, two belonging to the on-duty patrolmen and a third suspected to be a police pistol, Police Commissioner Dick Lee said at a news conference.
Police are investigating the incident and trying to confirm the identity of the dead man, who was suspected to have been a policeman, Lee said.
Gunfights are rare in Hong Kong, and Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee said he was "shocked and saddened" by the incident, reports the AP.
