Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces fought with suspected Taliban in central Afghanistan, leaving 10 militants and one Afghan soldier dead, the U.S. military said Friday. One U.S. soldier was injured.
The fighting in central Uruzgan province, little more than a week after landmark national elections, erupted Thursday after the Taliban fighters attacked a patrol of Afghan troops with mortars, heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades, the U.S. military said in a statement.
The U.S. troops called in air support, and bombing by helicopter gunships killed the 10 "enemy combatants" in Deh Rawood district, the statement said.
The wounded U.S. soldier, who was not identified, was listed in stable condition and was moved to a nearby U.S. base.
Also Thursday, fighting elsewhere in Uruzgan between U.S. and Afghan troops and the Taliban left four rebels dead, provincial Gov. Jan Mohammed Khan said.
