A man carrying a gun hidden inside a loaf of bread may have been aiming to assassinate the Turkish prime minister Monday but was detained by police before he could act, prosecutor Mehmet Serif Eren told the Anatolia news agency.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was climbing onto a bus after a speech marking the start of the school year in the town of Kutahya when security personnel noticed the man moving toward the bus and arrested him, the agency said.
"With regards to this suspect, the first evaluations give the impression that he was trying to assassinate our dear Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan," prosecutor Mehmet Serif Eren was quoted as saying.
The suspect was in police custody and was being questioned, Eren said.
