Australian can’t believe Indonesia reduced the prison term of terrorist suspect Abu Bakar Bashir

Australian Prime Minister John Howard said the nation was ”outraged” by the Indonesian government's decision to reduce the prison term of Abu Bakar Bashir, found guilty of being involved in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed at least 202 people.

Bashir was jailed for 30 months over his role in the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings that killed 88 Australians. The cleric had his sentence cut by 135 days on Wednesday, Indonesia's Independence Day, sparking anger from Australia and families of bombing victims, Reuters informs.

"All Australians are outraged that this sentence has been reduced. I find it offensive and I think millions of Australians will find it offensive," Howard told parliament on Thursday.

Howard said Indonesia was reviewing its remissions process, although it would not affect the latest decisions. The 2002 bombings killed 88 Australians.

Bashir is suspected by the U.S. and Indonesia of being a former leader of the al-Qaida-linked Southeast Asian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah. He has denied the allegations, according to Bloomberg.
