Reese Witherspoon: it is great to be brunette

Legally Blonde star Reese Witherspoon says she prefers life as a brunette. The actress died her hair dark for the premiere of new film Vanity Fair.

In Venice to promote the movie today, Witherspoon said: "It’s great to be brunette. "Nobody knows who I am. Everybody walks right past me. It’s a nice reprieve from my normal self."

The 28 year old mum of two recently complained she suffered from cellulite, stretch marks and saggy breasts.

But she looked in fine shape for her appearance on the Venice Lido with her co-star, British actor James Purefoy, reports Scotsman.

"Vanity Fair" gave Reese Witherspoon a chance to buck the on-screen custom of portraying 19th-century women as corseted ornaments, with the actress on Sunday describing her willful and ambitious character as a prototype for modern feminism.

The movie adapted from William Makepeace Thackeray's novel was the first of three American movies competing for best picture at the Venice Film Festival. At a press preview Sunday, the film was applauded but did not receive the raucous cheers that often hint at a potential winner.

"Vanity Fair" tells the story of Becky Sharp, a girl from the gutters who bulls her way upward in class-conscious British society despite monumental scorn. The character has sometimes been described as an unscrupulous social-climber, but director Mira Nair's film depicts her far more sympathetically.

The Indian-born Nair who won the top Golden Lion prize here three years ago for "Monsoon Wedding" described Sharp as "an ultimate modern woman."

"In the early 19th century, it was very difficult for her to carve her way, but she did it. And she had her own morals, she had her own journey. That was the journey I was inspired to tell.", informs ABC News.
