Georgia Prime Minister Zurab Zhvaniya has expressed gratitude to Russia 'for its very sensitive reaction to the conflict between Batumi and Tbilisi.' In an interview with Rustavi-2 television, Zhvaniya said: 'Abashidze's failing to obtain the support of a single government was a defining factor in the successful outcome of the negotiations.' The prime minister expressed similar thanks to Turkey and the Council of Europe.
'No one had any intention of depriving the autonomy of any of its rights, but Georgia will not share its sovereignty. Everyone in Adjaria understood that they were dealing with a strong government and its appropriate reactions. What has now happened is a lesson for all,' Zhvaniya asserted. He said the main problems faced in Adjaria are infringements of electoral rights and the use of terror and intimidation. He said it would take time to deal with the problems. He also announced that all sanctions imposed on Adjaria were to be removed at 23:00 Moscow time Thursday night.
