US Secretary of State Colin Powell had a telephone conversation with acting Georgian President Nino Burdzhanadze and noted they were glad that the Georgian conflict had been settled within constitutional regulations. According to a source in the Georgian parliament, the USA is ready to render aid to Georgia, and this issue will be discussed in detail in telephone negotiations over the next two weeks.
Currently, Burdzhanadze is holding meetings with law-enforcement agencies. She stated that maintaining law and order in the country was their main aim at the present stage. In the near future, she is expected to make a special statement as the acting Georgian president.
Eduard Shevardnadze stepped down from the post of Georgian president yesterday evening after negotiations with opposition leaders. The negotiations were attended by Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.
