Russian radar put into operation in Belarus

On Tuesday a radar station of the Russian Space Troops has been put on combat duty in Belarus. The radar is found near the city of Baranovichi and designed to locate ballistic missiles and space objects, the RIA Novosti correspondent quotes the Space Troops press service as saying today.

The radar, named Volga, was put on experimental duty last December. Time has proved its readiness for full-time fulfillment of goals, said the press service.

According to Anatoli Perminov, Commander of the Russian Space Troops, the Volga radar has filled the gap emerging in the north-western direction after the closure of the Skrunde radar in Latvia.

In the opinion of specialists from the Long Range Radio Communication Research Institute, which has developed the Volga radar, it can detect ballistic missiles in flight and space objects found several thousand kilometers away, identify them and track the targets.
