Russia will contribute to the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions on the settlement of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict by the warring parties for the sake of firm and acceptable settlement of the conflict, the Russian Foreign Ministry said commenting on the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution that extends the mandate of the UN Observers Mission in Georgia /UNOMIG/ until January 31, 2004.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry's estimate, the resolution is "a step taken by the UN Security Council to contribute to a complete political settlement of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict." The resolution highly appreciates and supports efforts taken by the UN Secretary General and Russia as a contributor as well as other states involved and the OSCE to peacefully settle the conflict between Tbilisi and the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia.
The document stresses the positive momentum given to the peaceful settlement by the meeting between the Russian and Georgian presidents in Sochi in March.
The resolution also stresses the important contribution by the CIS collective peacekeeping forces to the normalization of the situation in the region.
