Georgia has marked its independence day without a military parade

It is the sixth time now that Georgia marks its independence without a military parade.

As the press centre of the Georgian Defence Ministry reported, several pieces of heavy military equipment were represented in the Square of the Republic on Monday, and a column of the Georgian Defence Ministry's personnel (1,500 people) passed through the square in front of the stands. In the evening, the simulator for an air defence system will be presented in the headquarters of the Air Force.

The anniversary events were attended by Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, Defence Minister David Tevzadze, the top leadership of the country and the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia.

The last parade of the armed forces of Georgia took place on May 26, 1997.

Georgia announced its independence on April 9. 1991, and on May 26, that year, the first military parade took place on this occasion.
