Does Washington plan to overthrow Iranian regime?

Deputy White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan denied some US mass-media reports to the effect that the United States was planning to stage a coup d'etat in Iran.

Referring to official US Administration spokespersons, The Washington Post reported May 25 that the White House will host a conference aiming to elaborate America's Iranian policy May 27. Moreover, some influential Defense Department officials are calling on the US Government to take overt and covert action for the sake of provoking an Iranian coup by means of a popular uprising.

According to The Washington Post's sources, those, who advocate a tougher US line with regard to Iran, became particularly active, after the US intelligence community learned that Al-Qaida leaders, who are staying in Iran, helped mastermind terrorist acts in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Prominent US Senator Joseph Lieberman (Dem.) addressed Fox TV company audiences May 25, noting that the Teheran regime must be ousted. The replacement of the Iranian regime would meet the interests of the entire world and those of the Iranian nation, in the first place, Lieberman went on to say.

At the same time, Senator Joseph Bayden (Dem.), who heads the influential Senate Foreign Policy committee, said he doubted the fact that the United States could help topple the government of Iran. I don't think this is feasible, Bayden told NBC.

Iran's UN Ambassador Mohammed Javad Zarif spoke over the NBC network, commenting on the Washington Post's report. Iran doesn't intend to reconcile itself to any attempted foreign-backed coup, Zarif warned. However, Zarif also voiced hope to the effect that a reasonable approach will eventually prevail in Washington.
