The financial condition of the UN has significantly improved, and last year debts to the regular budget of the organization where sharply cut. According to the UN press service, Deputy General Secretary for Administrative Questions Catherine Bertini said that the organization was successful in extinguishing the part of the debt of countries providing peacekeeping forces and war technology for peacekeeping operations.
She said that USD 635 million had been received for the first four months of 2003 or USD 218 million more than year-on-year comparison. Nevertheless, 72 countries still owe the UN USD 305 million from 2002. The US owes two-thirds of that sum. Brazil and Argentina are in second and third place respectively.
