Approximately 7 thousand captive Iraqis were freed from temporary detention centers in Umm-Qasr, and an additional 2 thousand remain under guard. According to US military headquarters, the majority of Iraqis, who were freed, were lower ranking members of the republican guard or regular army soldiers, who were taken prisoner during the course of the war on the territory of Iraq.
Moreover, in Umm-Qasr prisoners continue to hold out including 200 citizens of other countries, including Jordan and Iran. The numbers of those holding out include usual criminals, bank robbers and people, who illegally participated in the war.
