Moscow's opinion on Security Council's new resolution on Georgia

Moscow finds it important that in its new resolution on the Georgian-Abkhaz (Abkhazia is a self-proclaimed republic on the Georgian territory) settlement the UN Security Council called on Tbilisi to comply with its obligations to stop the activities of terrorist groups, the Russian Foreign Ministry Information and Press Department informed RIA Novosti.

In Russia's opinion, in this connection the actions demanded from Tbilisi "would not only become a positive aspect in the context of the Georgian-Abkhaz settlement, but they would contribute to international efforts against terrorism." In its resolution the Security Council "insistently called on the Abkhaz and Georgian sides to make all possible efforts to surmount the existing mutual distrust and get down to constructive negotiations in the interests of political settlement, suitable for both sides." The sides are called for professing their renunciation of military rhetoric, campaigns in support of terrorist activities and settlement of the conflict by military means." According to Moscow, the Security Council's resolution "will become an extra impulse to the Georgian-Abkhaz settlement." Russia will provide for the adequate implementation of the resolution and carry on peace-keeping, mediatory efforts in the interests of stabilization of the situation in the region, rapprochement between Tbilisi and Sukhumi (the Abkhaz capital) and search for an efficient, mutually acceptable settlement of the conflict, the RF Foreign Ministry assured.
