Consultations between Russia and the European Union on the Kaliningrad region will take place in Brussels

Consultations between Russia and the European Union on the Kaliningrad region will be held in Brussels on Wednesday, July 24th, said ambassador of Denmark in Moscow Lars Vissing. Earlier, it was envisaged to hold the consultations on July 23rd, but as the ambassador said, the date was not convenient to the European Commission.

The ambassador said that the meeting would be attended by representatives of the European Union, by State Secretary Frijs Petersen of Denmark which at the present time holds the European Union's rotating presidency, and by Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Razov.

The Danish ambassador said Dmitry Rogozin, a recently appointed special representative of the Russian President on the problems of the Kaliningrad region in view of the European Union expansion, was likely to attend the meeting. Lars Vissing characterised him as "a very experienced Russian politician" and expressed confidence that the European Union would be able to conduct with him fruitful negotiations on Kaliningrad.

The Brussels consultations are expected to be of a technical character and are called upon to start practically resolving the problem of the transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of Russia.
