Oleg Chernov, deputy secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, has met with a group of American congressmen, the Security Council's press-service reported on Tuesday. The group is led by Nancy Pelosi, deputy head of the Democratic Party's faction in the US Congress' House of Representatives.
The participants in the meeting discussed topical issues of Russian-American cooperation in the struggle against international terrorism and, above all, in Afghanistan. They also discussed problems of strengthening strategic stability, non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons and other aspects of international security.
The American congressmen expressed gratitude to the Russian leadership for their consistent efforts in the anti-terror struggle. They stressed, in particular, the interest in strengthening mutually advantageous cooperation between the two countries in resolving conflicts and fresh challenges in various parts of the world and, in particular, in South Asia.
The sides noted the great importance of the recent summit in Canada which imparted a new quality to cooperation between the leading states on key world problems.
