A fortifying dam on the Terek has burst on the territory of the Babayurt district of Daghestan (an autonomous republic on the West bank of the Caspian Sea; is part of Russia).
The operational duty service of the republic's Emergencies Ministry reported that this created the threat that the farmland, pastures and nearby settlements might be flooded.
The anti-flood headquarters of the district centre in Babayurt reported that the water broke through the earthen fortifying dam on Tuesday morning some 7 km above the Kargalinsk hydro-unit. The rupture is 5-6 metres wide. In the meantime, according to hydrologists, the pressure of the water in the district of the Kargalinsk hydro-unit remains strong -- up to 1,200 cubic metres per second, which is above the critical mark.
