On Tuesday official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Aleksander Yakovenko stated at a briefing that the Middle East statement of George Bush "contained a number of aspects which required explanations." According to him, Russia intended to discuss those moments with the American side in the nearest future.
Yakovenko indicated that Moscow treated with great attention the statements of George Bush in relation to prospects of the Middle East settlement. He indicated that "we considered that plan to be extremely important in the present, very complicated and tense situation in the region." According to the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, one might single out certain provisions in the plan proposed by George Bush which Moscow was prepared to support. First of all it concerned cessation of the Israeli occupation and its settlement activity, the necessity to operate on the basis of UN Security Council's resolutions 242 and 338, efficient struggle against terrorism. Moscow positively appraised ideas regarding the establishment of a Palestinian state, the conducting of reforms of the Palestinian National Authority.
Moscow would continue the analysis of the proposed plan, first of all within the framework of the four international intermediaries on the Middle East settlement.
