Portugal: Motorway dare-devils

A new craze seems to have taken hold in Portugal and Spain. Young dare-devils drive at high speeds along motorways – on the wrong side.

Many deaths have been caused by this irresponsible act by young drivers, mainly at night, sometimes for a laugh, sometimes to win a bet and sometimes to commit suicide. The Portuguese A1 Motorway between Lisbon and Oporto has been the scene of many of such incidents in the past year, while a similar phenomenon is starting to take place in Spain.

Another group which is starting to perpetrate this act of lunacy, but involuntarily, are the elderly, who do not understand the road signs and are led into error, which they only discover when it is too late.
