The special task group of the Northern Fleet has returned to its base at Severomorsk, reports the Fleet's staff. At this stage of the operation held in late May and in June, the recovery crew raised from the seabed a pressure tank, a part of a torpedo launcher, the nose fairing and several other fragments of the first section of the Kursk submarine.
The Northern Fleet headquarters report that the recovery of the other fragments would entail great risks for the underwater craft crews.
At the next stage, the remnants of the first section of the sub and two vacuum anchors, which were used to raise the Kursk last autumn, will be exploded to ensure the safety of fishing in the region. The explosion will be made by the mine/torpedo department of the Northern Fleet but the date not been set yet, say staff officers.
