Secretary General of the Council of Europe Walter Schwimmer will pay an official visit to Latvia on May 3-4 in the context of his May tour of a number of European states. As the RIA Novosti correspondent reports, Walter Schwimmer intends to conduct negotiations in Riga with the heads of the republic which now presides at the oldest pan-European organisation. He will meet with the Latvian Prime Minister and the members of the Latvian delegation in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The Secretary General will also take part in the international conference on the theme: "Local democracy at the dawn of the 21st century," which has been organised by the Council of Europe and the Latvian side. As RIA Novosti was told in the press service of the Council of Europe, whose headquarters is in the French city of Strasbourg, after Riga Walter Schwimmer will visit Bucharest, Berlin and on May 23 will arrive in Moscow for a two-day visit.
