The troops of the opposition Northern Alliance have entered Mazar-i-Sharif, the main town of the northern province of Balkh, and are fighting battles in its streets. This was reported by the correspondent of the NBC television company who is currently staying in the territory controlled by the Northern Alliance. On Tuesday, referring to the interview given by Deputy Defence Minister of the Northern Alliance Atikulla Baryalai, the newspaper New York Times reported that the Alliance's forces are already at the approaches to Mazar-i-Sharif. According to Baryalai, the successful offensive on Mazar-i-Sharif is being carried out not by Abdurrashid Dustum but by field commander Ostad Ata, who was in the past one of the most well-known Afghan mujahedins. However, Baryalai refused to make any forecasts as to when the Northern Alliance will be able to fully seize Mazar-i-Sharif.
