Within its anti-terror campaign in Afghanistan, the United States intends to use the air base in Azerbaijan as a supply or emergency base in addition to the bases in Uzbekistan and Pakistan which are already being used. The Washington Post newspaper said this on Friday, referring to officials from the US administration. According to the newspaper, the George W. Bush administration is exerting pressure on the US Congress with the aim of annulling the sanctions against Azerbaijan as soon as possible. This will make it possible for the United States to start using the air base in Azerbaijan right away. Having intensified its work in the region, the White House and the US Department of State have been actively conducting negotiations of late with Azerbaijan and Armenia, and Bush personally spoke on the telephone with the leaders of these two countries, says Washington Post. According to the data of the newspaper, Azerbaijan and Armenia proposed that the USA could use their air space, having thus provided a new corridor for the planes of the US Air Force which will be able to use this corridor for delivering strikes against Afghanistan by taking off from the American bases in Europe and Turkey.
