Belgian Foreign Minister calls for halt in attack on Afghanistan while Kofi Annan requests early end to bombing campaign.
Louis Michel, the Foreign Minister of Belgium, currently hosting the EU presidency, has called on the US/UK alliance to cease the attacks on Afghanistan during Ramadan. The Belgian Foreign Minister echoed the calls for a period of peace during the Moslem holy month after having heard the position of numerous Arab leaders.
The Secretary-General of the UNO, Kofi Annan, has declared that he hopes the attacks will end as soon as possible, for the UN humanitarian aid programmes to proceed. “I would like to see the end to these military operations, so that we can restart our humanitarian operations. I hope we can overcome this situation as soon as possible”, said Kofi Annan at a press conference on November 1st.
He added that the longer the conflict went on, the more strain would be put on the parts involved, insinuating that a prolonged campaign would be negative for the image of the USA and the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, Megawati Sukarnoputri, the President of Indonesia, worried about an increasing level of tension among the country’s 210,000,000 people (190 million of which are Moslems, making this country the largest Moslem nation), has stated that the US/UK bombing raids against Afghanistan are totally unfounded because there is no proof that this operation is justified.
Indonesia has increasingly expressed its concern over the increasing list of civilian casualties and has called for a halt in the attacks during Ramadan, which begins of November 17th. Radical Islamic groups in Indonesia have declared that they will attack US and British interests in Indonesia.European Union: halt attacks
