A new municipal government has been formed in Jelalabad, the administrative centre of the Eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar. Well-known field commander Mullah Yunus Khales has been appointed the city mayor. The Qatar TV station al-Jazeera claims the Taliban have been ousted from the city by rebellious city residents supported by militants from the Pashtoon tribe of Popolzai. Its leader, Hamid Karzai, was the deputy foreign minister in the Mujaheddin government.
