Russia is determined to advance its legacy of harmonious and peaceful coexistence between the country's many cultures and ethnic and religious communities, Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told the United Nations General Assembly during an overall political debate. "Building on that foundation, Russia will continue to make a constructive contribution to the emerging global system of countering new threats and challenges," Ivanov pronounced. Russia's diplomacy chief pointed out that the UN resolutions are only as effective as they are executed by the entire international community. "Apparently, there is no nation today where the task of bringing the national legislation in line with international standards would be irrelevant," he argued. He went on to say Russia advocated decisions of the kind that would put in place strategic stability, equal security for all nations, and sustainable development and prosperity for people of the globe to enjoy. The United Nations has a crucial role to play in consolidating the international community's efforts, Ivanov continued. He said the UN is now and has ever been the most important instrument in the hands of the international community. Intelligent and responsible use of that instrument would allow us to establish a democratic and fair new world order for the 21st century, Ivanov declared.
