9 month old baby gang-raped in South Africa

South Africa is in uproar after six male adults gang-raped a nine-month-old baby girl in her home. The motive: to protect themselves against AIDS.

The myth that if a man has sexual relations with a virgin, he will be protected against, or cured of, AIDS, was behind the rape of this baby girl by six adult men. As they were being tried in Upington court on November 13th, a crowd gathered outside calling for the rapists to be hanged.

There are 21,000 cases of child rape in South Africa every year, but many others go unreported, since most of these crimes are perpetrated by family members. Regarding rape on adult women and children combined, there are more than 50,000 complaints a year but again, the real number is far higher.

South Africa has one of the worst rates for rape in the world. The death penalty was suspended in 1994 with the fall of the apartheid regime but due to the current high crime rate, there are calls for it to be brought back.

In this case, the nine-month-old baby, Tshepang (“I have hope”) had to undergo several operations due to the horrific injuries she sustained.
