Talks between general Abdulrashid Dustum, one of the Northern Alliance leaders, and two Taliban warlords are due to start in Mazar-i-Sharif in the coming hours. According to a RIA Novosti correspondent, this information was reported by the MENA news agency which referred to sources in the Northern Alliance. The sources do not rule out that Dustum will try to persuade the Taliban commanders to surrender, promising amnesty to them and their gunmen. At the same time, sources stress, the "honourable capitulation" terms will not be applied to foreign mercenaries: Uzbek, Chechen, Arab, and Pakistani, who make up the bulk of the Taliban grouping encircled in Kunduz.
