Pashtoon leader Hamid Karzai is talking with the Taliban surrender of the city of Kandahar in south-western Afghanistan. He said he is in contact with Mullah Fazil, commander of the Taliban forces, reported the Qatar television station Al Jazeera on Thursday. Karzai also said that Taliban units, which have in recent days been exposed to massive air strikes of the United States, are leaving their positions around Kandahar and retreating to the city. Former deputy foreign minister in the Mujahedin government, Karzai is the leader of the largest Pashtoon tribe Popolzai, numbering half a million people, and is believed to be the supporter of ex-King of Afghanistan Zahir Shah. Karzai's headquarters are located in the Uruzgan province in central Afghanistan.
