The news was broken by Sky News, which quoted eye witness accounts of Antonov transport aircraft systematically landing at Kunduz airport, where they took aboard the foreign Al-Qaeda fighters, who were flown away to a secret destination.
This destination is unknown. There has been unsubstantiated speculation that it is Pakistan. As yet the motives for this are unclear and it is not known where the Antonovs came from. One thing is certain, when the Northern alliance took the city, the foreign Al-Qaeda fighters were nowhere to be found.
15,000 Taleban fighters are encircled in two villages just outside Kunduz.
