On Thursday Lieutenant-General Anatoly Mazurkevich, chief of the General Department of international military cooperation of the Russian Defense Ministry, stated to journalists that the US administration's decision to unilaterally withdraw from the ABM treaty of 1972 was not unexpected for Russia and did not present a real threat to its security. While stating that he mentioned appropriate statements of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Defense minister Sergei Ivanov on this matter. Mazurkevich indicated that Russian leadership confidence in the lack of threat for national security was based on Russian missile and nuclear potential which would still for many years serve as a reliable guarantor of Russia's defense capability. Mazurkevich was also confident that it was impossible to create a really efficient system of national anti-missile defense, moreover that the existing American technologies "were presently only on paper".
