Mehdi Safari, special envoy of the president of Iran for the Caspian status, has arrived in Baku. The Iranian envoy will have negotiations with the foreign minister of Azerbaijan, Vilayat Guliev. The president of Azerbaijan, Geidar Aliev, is also expected to receive Mehdi Safari. In Baku Safari, a former ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Moscow, is supposed to discuss the definition of the Caspian status and the course of preparations for an official visit to Iran by Geidar Aliev. The visit is due in the second half of February. Before he arrived in Baku, during two weeks of negotiations in Nakhichevan (the administrative center of the Azeri autonomous area on the border with Iran) Mehdi Safari discussed with the leaders of the Nakhichevan autonomy matters of expansion of trade and economic cooperation and implementation of the gas pipeline Khoy-Julfa, through which Iranian gas will arrive to Nakhichevan. The project costs 40 million dollars.
