The text of the basic treaty between Russia and Romania has been practically agreed upon. Romanian President Ion Iliescu told reporters about it after his meeting with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov. According to him, in the course of the meeting the sides pointed out "a substantial progress in drafting the basic political treaty between the two countries." The work over the text of the joint declaration is going on. It will reflect the problems of mutual interest, said Ion Iliescu. "There are prerequisites that this work will be completed in the near future," he observed. The head of the Romanian state and Igor Ivanov spoke of the interest of both countries in economic cooperation. In the opinion of the Romanian President, the completion of the work over the basic treaty will make it possible to start preparations for the summit between Romania and Russia.
