Exposition devoted to 200th anniversary of Russian Foreign Ministry opens in Madras

The Russian cultural centre in Madras (the capital of the southern Indian state Tamilnadu) hosted a gala opening of the exposition devoted to the 200th anniversary of the Russian foreign ministry.

The opening of the exposition was timed for the beginning of Russian President Vladimir Putin's official visit to New Delhi.

The exposition was opened by Professor Mutu, Vice Chancellor (rector) of Madras University, one of the most prestigious universities in India. Attending the gala ceremony were public and business figures, journalists, and graduates of Soviet and Russian universities.

The local media qualified the exposition as a large-scale public event for Madras.

The exposition features copies of rare archived documents, letters and photos. The local public will be particularly interested in the large department devoted to the history of Russo-Indian relations. Here you may see unique documents of the remote past. Mutual interest in establishing close relations is particularly demonstrated in the 1646 correspondence between Russian Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov and Shah Djahan mogul of India, and the copied letter of Peter the First "To the Indian Shah" sent in 1718.

The Russian cultural centre in Madras intends to show this exposition in Trivandrum, the capital of the southern Indian state Keral.
