On Tuesday, as commenting on a possibility of constructing a gas pipeline from Turkmenia through Afghanistan and Pakistan, William Taylor, a US State Department coordinator on matters of assistance to Europe and Eurasia, stated in Azhgabad that the US government supported Turkmenia in its intention to have several natural gas export options.
According to the American diplomat, the most important thing is to prove that it is a commercially viable project.
The US is the major depositor in the Asian Development Bank, which is one of the participants in the project to construct such a gas pipeline. Taylor reported that Washington was waiting impatiently for the feasibility study of the project. It would be presented at a regular meeting of the Turkmen-Afghan-Pakistani commission, to take place in Kabul in September.
The gas pipe is designed to transport gas to Central Pakistan from the Turkmen deposit in Dovletabad, one of the largest in the world. Its reserves are estimated at 1,756 billion cubic meters.
