Ukraine and the European Union will have to make concessions to Russia — a reality that Europe can no longer avoid, Michael Roth, the chairman of the German Bundestag’s Committee on Foreign Affairs said in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
“Ukraine and Europe will have to make painful concessions,”
said Roth when asked whether Kyiv might ultimately lose in the conflict. He stressed that Europe cannot — and will not — compensate in the short term for what the United States is no longer prepared to provide to Ukraine.
Earlier, the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, spoke out firmly against territorial concessions by Ukraine as a means of resolving the conflict. She underscored that “aggressive wars” must be condemned rather than rewarded, warning that any compromise with such violations would pave the way for future armed conflicts.
Commenting on Russia’s actions, Baerbock stated that accepting “a breach of one of the United Nations’ most fundamental rules by a permanent member of the Security Council” would amount to granting it impunity.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Russia would in any case establish control over Donbass and Novorossiya. According to him, Moscow had previously suggested that Kyiv withdraw its forces from Donbass to avoid hostilities, but the Ukrainian side rejected the proposal.
