War between NATO and Russia could begin before 2029, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
“We have always said that this could happen around 2029. But now there are those who believe it may be possible as early as 2028, and some military historians even think that we have already lived through our last peaceful summer,” the minister stated.
Pistorius urged that the armed forces of NATO member states must be better equipped for potential hostilities against Russia. At the same time, he emphasized that the alliance already possesses substantial deterrence capabilities “both in the conventional and nuclear domains.”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, for his part, suggested that Russia cannot attack the European Union, allegedly due to a lack of military resources.
In NATO, Alarm Over Russia’s Modernized Nuclear Arsenal
The German newspaper Bild, citing a classified NATO report, previously wrote that the alliance views Russia’s new strategic, nuclear-powered, unlimited-range cruise missiles—known as Burevestnik—as a serious security threat.
“Russia’s nuclear arsenal modernization is complete. Moscow now possesses several renewed categories of weapons, including submarines, cruise missiles, and intermediate-range missiles,” the publication reported.
According to NATO intelligence, the Burevestnik missile represents a major danger due to its high maneuverability, its ability to reach speeds of up to 900 kilometers per hour, and its capacity to be launched from mobile platforms.
“Burevestnik can orbit for extended periods before striking its target,” the report notes.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry Issues a Warning to NATO
If NATO countries decide to attack Russia, Moscow will respond accordingly, stated Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.
“If such a mad idea as attacking Russia arises among NATO strategists, they should have no doubt that we will respond using all capabilities at our disposal. We are prepared for any scenario, while always proceeding from the primacy of peace, friendship, and equitable cooperation,” she emphasized.
Zakharova added that Moscow has no plans to strike NATO member states, but assured that necessary measures to guarantee Russia’s security are already being taken—especially in light of the alliance expanding its military contingents near Russian borders.
Putin Calls Western Claims About Russian Attack on Europe 'Hysteria'
Western countries are not storytellers but specialists in horror films. With this comparison, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the hysteria spreading across the West over alleged Russian plans to attack Europe.
“They are experts not in fairy tales, but in horror movies. What we are seeing now is a manufactured hysteria about Russia supposedly intending to attack Europe,” he said.
According to the Russian leader, any reasonable observer should recognize such claims as provocation and incompetence, as Moscow has neither the desire nor the intention to attack anyone.
