The Saeima of Latvia in the final reading approved the amendments, which imply a ban on the supply of natural gas from Russia from January 1, 2023, writes Delfi.
The idea of abandoning Russian fuel was previously conceptually agreed upon by the government, an initiative was taken by a coalition of conservative forces after the start of Moscow's special military operation in Ukraine.
The fact that Latvia, as well as Lithuania and Estonia decided to avoid buying gas from Russia, was announced in April by Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins. Back then, he stressed that all three Baltic countries at that time did not import Russian gas.
Karins also supports the inclusion of a gas embargo in the next package of European sanctions. At the same time, almost all of Latvia's imports last year came from Russia.
