Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze is in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, for a two-day visit. He is taking part in the ceremony to mark the start of construction on the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer is also taking part in the ceremony.
According to the Georgian President's press office, Shevardnadze will hold bilateral talks with his Turkish and Azerbaijani counterparts during his visit.
The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which will be 1760 kilometers long, will carry oil from Azerbaijan and the Caspian region via Georgia to the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan, from where it will be transported to European and world markets.
