A democratic law-based republic with a new constitution, a responsible social policy and a public agreement with the trade unions - these are the main points of the election program of Vojislav Kostunica, incumbent President of Yugoslavia and leader of the Democratic Party of Serbia.
The candidate for the president of the Serbian republic declared that at a many-thousand election meeting held in the centre of the Yugoslav capital on Tuesday evening.
Kostunica expressed the hope that the union of Serbia and Montenegro would be preserved and that it would be admitted to the Council of Europe. He criticised the Serbian leadership's actions, declaring that "the government of Serbia and its premier want to be inviolable", believing that their reforms are above everything, even above the law."
Here lie the differences between them and us, stressed the leader of the Democratic Party of Serbia. We want reforms that are in keeping with the law and would do people good. At the forthcoming elections, and then at parliamentary elections, with a new Skupstina and a new government we shall show once again what Serbia is like and what it should be like," stressed Kostunica.
Kostunica did not rule out a second round of presidential elections. "We will not fear even if everything does not end with the first round," he noted.
