Earthquake measuring 5.6 on Richter scale rocks Serbia killing 2

42225.jpegA relatively powerful earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale has rattled central Serbia, killing two people and wounding dozens of others.

According to Serbia's Seismological Institute, the tremor hit 10 kilometers (six miles) north of the city of Kraljevo at 1:56 a.m. (0056 GMT) on Wednesday.

The quake was relatively shallow with a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). It was followed by four other less powerful aftershocks.

Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the city, but they have so far found no one else trapped under the rubble, RTT News reports.

In the outskirts of Serbia's Kraljevo, however, it killed a couple in their bedroom - Natalija and Sinisa Stasic, both about 50 years of age. Their son who was in the same house was not hurt.

The Serbian authorities report of at least 50 injured persons in Kraljevo, a city of 70 000. Parts of the city are without electricity, and the hospital building was seriously damaged, Novinite.com informs.
