Former Panamanian Dictator Manuel Noriega Extradited to France

The plane carrying Panama's former strongman Manuel Noriega has landed in Paris after his extradition from the United States to face money-laundering charges.

The plane touched down at Charles de Gaulle airport north of Paris shortly before 8am on Tuesday (1600 AEST), according to the arrivals board, Sydney Morning Herald informs.

A spokesman for French justice ministry, Guillaume Didier said that prosecutors will notify an arrest warrant against Noriega, who is facing money laundering charges there. A judge would decide whether to place him under temporary detention until his case was referred to a criminal court.

Noriega was deported after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed the orders for his extradition on Monday, PTT News reports.

Noriega was overthrown by the U.S. and brought to Miami to face drug charges in 1990. He was convicted and completed his sentence in 2007. While in a U.S. prison, Noriega was convicted in France of money laundering. French officials say he will be given a new trial if sent to that country.

Successive Panamanian governments have called on the U.S. to extradite Noriega to stand trial in the Central American nation, where he faces charges including the killing of army officers, according to Bloomberg.
