The White House says the decision to delay a meeting between President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama was mutual.

The Tibetan spiritual leader is in Washington to receive an award, but won't meet with the U.S. president. A meeting will take place after Obama visits Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing in November.

China reviles the Dalai Lama, and the Obama administration wants to establish friendly ties between Hu and Obama during next month's visit.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs say Tuesday a strong relationship between the U.S. and China is in the interests of Tibet because it "allows us to talk to them about the cares and concerns of the Tibetan people."
